Pit,
I tied a bunch of flies using Christmas decoration tinsel. Some of it is great while some of it will almost dissolve and loose its color. But considering the price it's worth trying. Simply dunk a bit of it in water and see how it acts.
It is sometimes a little coarse, but for pike and bass flies it's pretty good. I'm currently writing an article on tying big flies, and have already included a chapter on alternative material sources including Christmas and Halloween ornaments.

Hi to all. Did anyone try to use Xmas tree lametta/tinsel? I have it in red , gold and silver. usually we through it away. Can it be used for this fly?
thanks for your answers

Hi Bob. I live in Beacon, New York, in the lovely Hudson Valley region. Your photographs do great justice to the beauty around us! Thank you. I'm not a great fisherman but my brother is. (He forwarded this article to me.) I am always trying to find ways to lure him out of our native Michigan to some spots here. (I'm sure you'll agree that Michigan has some ideal fishing as well.) I'm not sure where you've ventured in New York but I hope you can suggest some spots near me. Like you, my brother is prepared to fish for anything that swims. Best regards, T.
Love your site, I am just learning and your site is very helpful. thank you
I will be in Tuscany and Venice in late March, 2013. Any fishing possibilities or recommendations? Fresh or salt water opportunities?
Thank you for your kind words. It's midwinter now and I am looking foward to the warm days off spring. You are a very lucky man Flavien to live in Normandy, much longer seabass season! I tried to fish for seabass in Morbihan, Brittany some time ago but not much more than a few juveniles came to hand, but stunning surroundings there. Hope to visit the french coast again for seabass.
cheers
Marcelo,
I'm an avid canadian fly tyer with a taste for classic streamers. I've got a copy of the most beautiful book, ForgottenFlies and have always admired your work. In particular, the quality of your heads are simply amazing. Can you indicate what head cement you use to obtain such a fabulous finish?
Thank you in advance,

Ditto from me. I grew up in Upstate NY..infact smack-dab in the middle. Never got skunked. Even now, when I visit my old stomping grounds.
Hi Luke,
a quick first reply from a neighbouring country. Feb is difficult. If your unlucky everything is frozen (the Dutch are great speed skaters and that for a reason). It could even be that Northern Pike is in closed season.
TL Florian (who froze his butt pike fishing last weekend at 21 F with no fish :) )
the sparseness of this fly makes it a real winner. love it!
chartreuse and yellow popping color combinations, lovely
the green and red hot spot sure pulls in your eyes, great fly!
Very beautiful fly, the wing....WOW.
An outstanding streamer,love it!.....
Dan, nothing like the action of Fox Tail in the water.Beautiful creation!
Very impressive video. Awesome!!! Lets keep places like this intact.
A nice fly,but in my neck of the woods(U.S.),we would call it a wolly worm, either way nice simple fly, that works in both still,& moving waters, tight lines,& bent rods.
… I have a small favor to ask.
Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.
The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
