I tied some near perfect patterns last year for the Bahamas using normal materials and Loon UV Clear. Nada. They were ignored by herds of bones. I went back to gotcha's and crazy charlies (tan arctic fox wing with pink head) in size 6 and... Those flies look like nothing that I have seen in the ocean but are amazing! My guess is that the movement of the fox wing suggested life whereas the "perfect" flies did not.
And, almost all of my hookups were not on the strip but when the fly stay on the bottom with the current moving the wing. I kept a tight line and could feel the take and missed very few strikes.
What color wing to use? I suggest using the color that best matches the bottom/sand where you are fishing. I found that my darker Keys flies were useless as the sand in our area was an almost white beige. We also discovered, at low tide, the flats were covered with this color crabs just larger than a US dime. We moved to size 6 and 8 flies and had much more success. Match the hatch! Just like when fishing a new stream and turning over rocks to assess insect life to match, spend some time on the flats determining the color and size of the prey and your luck will increase.
I am not a marine biologist but assume that prey in an area spawn at about the same time and their offspring grow from very small to full size at a fairly uniform rate. So, determine what size is predominant at the TIME you are there and match that size.
I hope that a biologist reads this and opines on my assumption!

That's why most of my streamers are marabou or bucktail! ;-)
I really don't think it looks all that bad. I have tied uglier.
Darren,
Kudos to you for taking on such a monumental, but very rewarding project. Your photographs are outstanding.
Also, thank you to your fly tiers, without whom your project would not have been possible. I look forward to receiving, and reading volumes 1 & 2 of Streamers 365. Blurb is a very good publishing group. April, and Streamers 365, Vol. 3, is on my calendar. Thank you Martin for bringing these volumes to our attention. Kate
Excellent utilitarian tying station! The only addition i would suggest is to inset in the board itself magnets for holding finished flies and various size hooks. This can be done with a router. Or you could just glue the magnet to the top of the board. Craft stores have all sizes of cheap magnets. Again - excellent!
Ron,
I have no camera for video and still two photo step-by-steps to make, but then........I'll try to do my very best.
Cheers

This would be a good fly to show in a video as it has applications for many fish.
Great tie. I like the cap used to hold the razor blade. Can you advise what it is?
Hi Joonas,
It's a simple fly:
Hook: Maruto C40 size 6
Tail: Teal Flank or Use 2 Gooes Biots white
Body: Hare Ear dubbing, 1/3 front darker Hare Ear dubbing
Back: Pheasant tail, Covered with UV glue.
Legs: Grizzly Barred Rubber Legs or Goose Biots.
Beads; 2 or 3 pcs of tungsten (volfram) beads 3,5 mm
I will load a video shortly tying this fly on www.medfluga.se
Enjoy

Great film. Very clear commentary. Sometimes hands go out of view but that rarely affects understanding of the technique.
Where can one but Sparton nymph wrap? No contcat details given on their site!
This is a great book. It is the book to have well sit on the bank of a Gaspesia Salmon River!
Thanks everyone for stopping by to check out the streamers
This sleek looking fly is very "fishy" looking,i bet it would work anywhere.I will be tying up a few to try on the Scottish trout....
Great looking Streamer
Love the flow
[b:15740cd014]Pheatherz [generally speaking] have a concave [inner/dull] and a convex [outer/shiny] side... [please correct me if I'm mistaken]
I apply a bead of L.C.A. along the spine [just wide enough to involve the barbs] on the concave side and a bead on the target [hook shaft/tube]...
Once ready to spot weld, have the light in hand and at-the-ready...
When the two surfaces touch and the phinal pheather position is achieved, ON goes the UV curing light... Bada BING... Bada BOOM...
I've tried Tuffleye, Clear Cure Goo, Bug-Bond, Loon, and Deer Creek...
The ONLY one left in my kit is BUG-BOND Original with the Pro Tip...
'Bug-Bond offers me the best control and pinpoint precision application...
It's durable, quick to cure, and my personal L.C.A. of choice... 'works BEST for ME...!!!
I also prefer Tuffleye Clear Coat to ensure a tack phree, glassy smooth surface...
and...
No matter which L.C.A. that you choose, I'd still recommend placing the phinished welded phlyz in the presence of the ultimate curing light [the SUN] to absolutely cure 100% thru and thru...

Good morning Pete,
it's me again with a question. After my first attempts, my LCR work looks still horrible, but the movement of the fly is very subtle in the water (bath tube). My question is, when you're welding a phly with 3 saddle feathers on each side, are they all welded with the shiny side to the hook or tube and what is you preferred tool for applying LCR (I know these are two questions - sorry  )?
Cheers

Good morning Pete,
whilst looking the new picture made from the front, I became unsure who the predator is, the fish in the water or the fish imitation at the fly line........
very nice as everytime. Thanks.
Cheers

This will be great for trout, salmon and bass in the early season. Thanks
Beautiful fish, absolutely beautiful

… I have a small favor to ask.
Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.
The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
